Ayeza Khan and Wahaj Shine as Mubashira and Zaid

Mubashira and Zaid are both strong-headed and hail from the upper tiers of society, but both are poles apart from each other in personality. We believed Kashmala would not pursue Rayyan anymore after how he treated her at lunch, but Kashmala confides to her father about him, revealing that she has feelings for him and would like to marry him.

Her father was thrilled with this news and thanked Kashmala for choosing a suitable boy from their own circle. He promised to speak with Jaffar (Usman Peerzada) as soon as possible.

Highlighting the minorities and their struggle is an important aspect of my narrative but I wanted to keep it very subtle so it does not seem educational. Making the narrative engaging and entertaining was my priority, alongside layering themes into the narrative so the film is not preachy but will start a conversation about important issues of our society”, stated Babar Ali, the writer and director of ‘John’.

From intercut sequences where John is riding a bike and where the passengers change to the scene where he meets his boss in front of a swinging electric bulb, everything Babar Ali does turns to gold.

From simple but impactful dialogues to brilliant cinematography of Karachi by Asghar Ali Ghanchi, where the viewers get to see lesser filmed places like the Christian cemetery (Gora Qabristan), railway colony where minorities live, and the shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, John is top-notch in every way.

The sound design and background music might have been done in India but that’s okay considering the end result has come up as a Pakistani project the audience could be proud of. The way the director has represented the Christian community of Pakistan is also a step in the right direction because they are an integral part of our society. Their Churches are as classy as they come while their houses and their way of living are something that should have been covered in a film long before it eventually did.

The Matchless Saleem Meraj

From theatre to TV and now films, Saleem Meraj has never disappointed the audience with his performance even though some of his choices have been horrendous but he has rectified it all with Dawood in John. For once, the veteran actor was cast in a role that was made for him, where he could use his unlimited expressions, give variation to his matchless voice and appear as a dominating character, unlike his many previous outings as a film actor.

His dialogues were the reason why many in the cinemas were not talking to their partners on either side of the seat; when he delivered a well-crafted line, he meant every word and that’s what helped the film, his co-stars and above all the writer/director who penned and filmed it. For some, the character might seem like another shade of his Laal Kabootar avatar but in reality, it was much bigger, much better, and much scary than that. If any actor wants to know how one should act in a film to make an impact, watch Saleem Meraj in John and you will definitely get a lot of pointers from his mannerisms and expressions.

The mature Aashir Wajahat we need

He may have worked in his father Wajahat Rauf’s films before John but 2023 is the year of the new Aashir Wajahat who made his debut way back in 2015 as a child actor in Karachi Se Lahore. First, he was part of a HUM TV Ramadan play Chand Tara and now makes his debut as a main lead in a feature film. His father Wajahat Rauf and mother Shazia (director and producer of his earlier projects) had nothing to do with John except encouraging their son to go ahead and explore himself which he did in a great manner.

From someone who couldn’t ride a bike or fire a gun to playing a gangster who could do both, Aashir Wajahat was the mainstay of John. Be it the scene where he is asked to clean a sewer or where he gets to know what Dawood does for a living, Aashir’s expressions were pure gold. The romantic angle was also a twist in the tale and he handled them all in style. Despite blackening his face to look like a poor boy from the Christian society, he was able to look the part he auditioned for and excelled in.

Raza Samo and Romaisa Khan excel on Debut

The two biggest takeaways from John were debutant Raza Samo and Romaisa Khan who managed to look the part as well as be the character on their first try. Despite not having much experience as an actor, Raza was able to pull off Fazal convincingly and had the funniest lines in the film. Not only did the audience laugh at his stupid jokes but also wanted to see more of him, which they couldn’t since he wasn’t the main character or the supporting one.

As for Romaisa, she was amazing as Maria not because she looked like Maria but because she spoke as well as thought like a girl from the Christian community who wanted nothing else but a stable life. Her scenes with Aashir Wajahat before and after the wedding are a treat to watch and it is her character’s strong traits that eventually change the way John sees his life and career.

Even the supporting characters were flawless!

One must mention the name of Tabish Mughal as Bali Pehelwan who was outstanding like a veteran, even though it was the first time he acted in a film. The way he stood up opposite Saleem Meraj’s character and made a separate place for himself as the main antagonist proves that there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan.

Furthermore, had a lesser talented actress than Faiza Gillani been cast as John’s mother, or someone other than Ehteshamuddin been chosen to play the headmaster of the school where John is employed, the impact on the audience would have been far less than it eventually did. Faiza Gillani’s accent as a Christian of Punjabi descent was so spot-on that you had to wonder whether she was playing the character or the character was playing her. Ehteshamuddin, known more for his work behind the camera, was amazing as the soft-spoken headmaster whose interaction with John before he went over to the dark side made the first half laughable.

One must acknowledge the producer Faiza Khanum for ensuring that director Babar Ali gets everything he desires and that’s why the film comes out as a complete entertainer instead of a half-baked attempt like Madaari which also dabbled in the gangster genre but failed big-time.

When Punjab clashes with Turkey

The promo starts with a reference to Maula Jatt and a fiery entry of Farhan Saeed as ‘Kaka’. He appears as a young man who is aloof about life and seems in love with Sonya Hussayn’s character, 'Kanwal'.

His parents also compare him to his brother Saqib, essayed by Feroze Khan, who works in a restaurant in Turkey as a cook and waiter. There he meets a striking young woman Leena, essayed by Iman Aly, and takes her to Punjab to make his family meet his lady love.

But then things take a turn when Leena falls in love with the culture of the village and gets swayed by the desiness of the much-Punjabi 'Kaka'. The couple find a companion in one another, creating a sprout between Saqib and Kaka whilst breaking Kanwal’s heart.

But do Kanwal and Saqib too discover love in each other? The teaser has left it upon us to discover in cinemas.

Noori Natt’s sister in the story, Daro is powerful and is her own person. She knows how to wield a sword, ride a horse, and can defeat her enemy with fighting skills equivalent to any man.

The film indeed seems like a male-dominated plot. But the addition of the firecracker Daro amongst all the men will be a game-changer. We are also excited to see what flavor Mukhoo Jatti’s character, essayed by Mahira Khan, will add to the story. She is playing Fawad Khan’s love interest in the story.

Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Lashari’s dynamic partnership

It is quite evident that so far Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Lashari have steered TLoMJ out of quite troublesome times. From various interviews, we have realized that the duo have been quite patient with the project and fought security threats, lawsuits, and, not-to-forget, the pandemic to make this project see the light of day.

Their partnership together has been no less than a blessing for the movie. Bilal Lashari has already made his acclaim as a director with the award-winning Waar. Hikmat has aimed high by becoming the investor and producer of Pakistan's most expensive film. All eyes are on this trailblazing duo as everyone is excited about the work they have claimed to work effortlessly hard on. Will they be truly able to make a difference? We hope so!

Smashing global box office records, London Nahi Jaunga has been reigning over audiences across the globe. Still running successfully for the third week in cinemas in the United Kingdom, North America, the middle-east, Australia and in Pakistan the movie has managed to earn over 35.21 crores globally.

London Nahi Jaunga has done phenomenally well in international markets and had managed to accumulate more than Rs. 9 crore globally and in Pakistan over the Eid weekend after its release. The second in line was the Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa's starrer, 'Quaid E Azam Zinabad' which has collected Rs 1.4 crores in sales all over Pakistan.

London Jaunga is the story of a Jatt Punjabi man played brilliantly well by Humayun Saeed, who travels far and wide to win his lady love played by the uber-gorgeous Mehwish Hayat. The two have won hearts and the dynamic duo's on-screen chemistry has wowed audiences all over! The film also features Kubra Khan, Saba Hamid, Vasay Chaudhry and Gohar Rasheed in prominent roles. London Nahi Jaunga is directed by Nadeem Baig, penned down by Khalil ul Rehman Qamar and has been produced under the banner of ARY Films and Six Sigma Plus.

Ahsan Khan charms his way as the hero!

Ahsan Khan has been part of films for over two decades but instead of growing old, he keeps getting younger and that’s why he looks cool in Rehbra. He might look confused in a number of sequences but that’s part of his character, which is confused about love and arranged marriage. His parents want him to marry his childhood sweetheart (played by Sarish Khan) but he neither loves each other which drives ‘Danish’ towards Bubbly. The scenes where he stands for Bubbly – be it on the train, or under captivity – he is the quintessential good guy who we all need in our lives. And of course, he can dance as well and shows his moves in whatever limited opportunities he has on the screen!

Ayesha Omar makes you forget Khoobsurat!

Before Rehbra, Ayesha Omer was known as Khoobsurat (her character in Bulbulay) but now she will be known as both Khoobsurat and Bubbly, because she has done a great job in Rehbra. Not only is she shown as a headstrong girl who leaves her fiancé moments before the nikaah because she doesn’t love him, but also knows how to fight for her right no matter where she is. She is tough on the exterior but weak on the inside but doesn’t let the audience down, even when she is scolded for going to a men’s-only fair. She may come across as a chatterbox but that’s what makes her character interesting; she changes train compartments when she sees a friendly face, leaves her city to explore the country before marriage and listens to her heart, and if girls in Pakistan start following her, they might not need others to stand for them, for they can stand for themselves.

Sohail Sameer

He is without doubt one of the finest character actors we have in Pakistan, but the way Sohail Sameer plays the Sardar in Rehbra makes it hard for other actors to follow. He plays the head of the dacoits who rob a train and kidnap the passengers, including Bubbly, and blames Ahsan Khan’s character for the death of his wife who died in the crossfire with the police. The character may seem like the villain but the Saraiki speaking dacoit has an agenda that you could call noble, if you put yourself in his shoes. Watch the film for his excellent performance for he doesn’t disappoint in any scene.

Director Amin Iqbal steers Rehbra in the right direction!

Rehbra might be director Amin Iqbal’s first film but he has done TV long enough to know how to steer a film in the right direction. He completed the film on both sides of the pandemic which was not a small achievement. Although it seems that some scenes were shot in 2018 and others in 2020, even then the team must be commended for giving it their best shot. Unlike other Pakistani films, Rehbra has been shot mostly on outdoor locations and shows the best places to visit in Pakistan. The way the director has called the shots, handled the actors and carried the story forward is something to cherish, especially for a first-time film director.

The soundtrack is what keeps the magic alive

And then there are the songs – my only objection remains that the best song was saved for the last when it should have also been part of the title. Both Seemab Sen and newcomer Imran Ali have done a wonderful job as music composers; the Indian composer hardly disappoints in his films but the debutant Pakistani one isn’t far behind. The Rahat Fateh Ali Khan song Luk Luk Royian is in no way less than a hit Bollywood song and has been on the playlist of many since its release. Similarly, the title track isn’t far behind and if anyone compiles a list of things to take back from the film, the music would be on the top.

Already ruling the hearts of audiences on television screens, the leading pair are all set to set the stage on fire in your nearest cinema this Eid!

We also spotted legendary actor Seifee Hasan, Salim Meraj and Momin Saqib who seems to be playing the baddie this time. We can’t wait to see the star-studded cast bring the film alive! From the well-choreographed dances, vibrant imagery to the well delivered comic line and punches, Dum Mastam’s trailer has caught our eye.

Imran Ashraf and Amar Khan Steal hearts as Bao & Aliya in Dum Mastam’s trailer!

We are introduced to the ‘lover-boy’ Bao aka Imran Ashraf who is head over heels in love with Amar Khan who plays the role of ‘Aliya’. The vivacious, bubbly and bold Aliya dreams of becoming a star and says she has no time for any love story. We see Bao remain in pursuit of Aliya, however just like any good ol’ classical flick would play out, Dum Mastam’s trailer sees a change in pace when Aliya’s family refuses Bao’s proposal, he seems to have his heart broken and announces he has no interest in marrying her either! We’re loving the chemistry between Amar Khan and Imran Ashraf throughout the trailer and can’t wait to see the two together on the big screen.

The next scenes show Aliya getting approached by Adnan Siddiqui for dancing ‘cabaret’ and performing for him, she gladly accepts but it looks like her family does not support her decision and her dreams of making it as a huge star may never come true. In a turn of events, Bao who has a melodious voice gains fame and becomes a star overnight even when he had no aspirations to do so.

The movie has a lot to offer and we’ve been left wondering who is behind the masked youtube video, why are the popular reviewers we know and love including journalist and film critic, Omair Alavi, actor Arsalan Naseer and director and host, Wajahat Rauf accusing Bao of being a fraud? We’ll have to watch the film to find out!

Consequently, Yasir Nawaz has seized this chance and announced the release of his film ‘Chakkar’, starring Ahsan Khan and Neelum Munir. The film stars the director Yasir himself as well and is an action-packed murder mystery of a thriller. The cast also includes Javed Sheikh, Ahmed Hasan, Mehmood Aslam, and Naved Raza.

The promotional poster and teaser are out, generating hype and hoopla with their intriguing vibe.

The one-minute teaser begins with a horror-struck Neelum Munir under-attack, while Ahsan Khan and Yasir Nawaz appear to be rivals from the looks of one of the scenes in the movie.

The promo surely has done its job, raising curiosity while not revealing any major details. Surely, the makers have left us hanging for more till the official trailer makes its way on our screens.

However, Neelum Munir looks stunning and appears to be sporting different looks throughout the movie. Yasir and Ahsan have enigmatic avatars. So much so, we are left wondering who is the villain and who is the hero amongst them both.

It is indeed a daring move by Yasir Nawaz and Nida Yasir to produce a movie with an experimental genre in the theaters. A large chunk of movie-buffs love romantic and comedy stories. Will Chakkar work in cinemas? Let’s wait and watch.

With the release of Khel Khel Mein in November last year, all eyes were on the release of Yasir Hussain’s Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer. However, the movie, which was scheduled to hit cinemas on January 28, is now banned by the Punjab Government and the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC).

A CBFC spokesperson told the Express Tribune, "CBFC has halted the release of a film on Javed Iqbal. We are yet to consider its re-examination. CBFC Chairman Arshad Munir has a clear stance in this regard as it will be stopped for release but other provinces can re-examine it according to their policy.”

Directed by Abu Aleeha, the movie is based on a real story of a notorious criminal in Lahore, who is known for abusing and killing more than a hundred children in the city, back in the late 1990s. His killing spree wreaked terror in the country for Iqbal tortured children in the most brutal way. However, he was caught and sentenced to death.

The morbid movie takes a plunge into his life and psyche, with Yasir Hussain playing the role of Javed Iqbal. Ayesha Omer has donned the role of a policewoman in the story.

Of course, the ban has created a hue and cry from stars who believe that the movie deserves to be exhibited in cinemas for the growth of the industry.

The documentary was screened in Karachi and was attended by eminent and prominent members of society and intelligencia.

The documentary tells us how Sheikh Mujibur Rehman did not want an independent nation, how Indira Gandhi admitted to India’s active involvement in the separation of Pakistan, it breaks apart the fake news about 3 million deaths and 200,000 rapes, which are humanly impossible, it shows how Soviet Union and India played dirty politics to divide a nation to the extent of training Bengali civilians and arming them as Mukti Bahini in the camps on the Indian side of the border and initiating and supporting the “6 points” which they knew would ignite a separatist movement, and how the issues of resources and language were misused to promote a separatist politics.

Javed Jabbar has shown intellectual integrity in also analyzing where we went wrong, whether it was Ayub Khan’s One Unit Policy which caused political alienation of East Pakistanis, a growing trust deficit on resources and language, amplified by natural disasters and misused by separatists, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s power politics and refusal to comply with the 1970s election results, or Yahya Khan’s uninformed actions.

The audience greatly appreciated the efforts of the Evolution Media team, at bringing together international and national learned scholars, expert analysts, historians and public servants who had served at the time to unfold the story of 1971 like it has never been done before. Many shared that they were totally unaware of many of the information that were shared and how it completely changed their perspective on what had happened.

The documentary has been produced by Ms. Erum Binte Shahid, with Javed Jabbar as the Executive Producer and writer, Muhammad Zeeshan as the Content Director, and Mitra Bonshahi, Mehreen Jabbar and M. Bilal as the Consulting Editors.

While speaking at the event Ms. Erum Binte Shahid, the producer of the documentary said that she is honoured to have had “the privilege to share the true story of 1971 with the people of South Asia, especially those who were not witness to the events of those years that led to the events of 1971. I am humbled to have contributed towards demystifying the false information that has unfortunately become the mainstream history.”

The documentary is the first of its kind, sharing facts and information not revealed before. International and national experts and intellectual leaders address the false information and shares little known facts about 1971.

While addressing the audience the eminent Javed Jabbar, shared that “the history of 1971 has purposefully been diluted by hyperbole and false information. After 50 years it is time, we use the lens of facts and objective analysis to tell the untold story.”

Through the documentary Javed Jabbar factually and objectively highlights how India’s involvement was not arbitrary or based on an immediate response to a humanitarian crisis but a well-crafted long-term strategy, which they were able to manipulate due to the circumstances and political immaturity prevalent at the time.

Pakistan has always accepted the reality of Bangladesh with an open heart and wished them the best as a brotherly nation. However, moving forward in good faith makes it imperative to revisit the past and review what had happened, separating facts from myths, and accepting the reality.

Amidst many atrocities and stories that world refuses to talk about at great length, there is one that is attached to the narrative of Pakistan. That is the story of how Bangladesh was formed, and Pakistan lost its eastern satellite in one of the bloodiest stories in the nation’s history. Now, 50 years after the fall of Dhaka, the story returns to the minds of the citizens, via Nabeel Qureshi’s latest stint, Khel Khel Mein.

Starring Bilal Abbas Khan as Saad Sikander – a devil-may-care youngster with a heart enamoured by theatre, and Sajal Aly as Zara Karamullah – a studious girl-next-door with a family lineage linked to East Pakistan, the film directed by ace filmmaker Nabeel Qureshi and produced by Fizza Ali Meerza explores the many lost nuances of the history that we only attribute one page to in our textbooks.

The story begins with raising a question about just what exactly happened in the Eastern satellite of Pakistan. It – through Zara and Saad’s mischievous friendship and collective zeal for theatre – brings forward a story that leads from a college-life drama to them going into a real life one when they decide to participate in an annual drama competition in Dhaka, where all of the regional countries are invited to perform their plays. As luck would have it, despite odds, the team from Pakistan – studying at a prestigious institution – gets the chance to perform.

The first half is just that – a buildup to what’s yet to come. We see during this half, a growth in character for Saad, who finally realises that theatre could be a deep medium to work on, after which he befriends his frenemy Zara. During this half, we also find many voices of dissent that are against going to Dhaka and performing a play that they deem is against the discourse about the fall of Dhaka. Showing a dichotomy, Nabeel tries to explore how two generations share different views about the same situation – one where the people who saw the fall do not want to talk about it, and the other, who was brought after the separation, want to know what exactly happened.

Post intermission, all of this is once and for all answered. We see the team from Pakistan reaching erstwhile East Pakistan, and modern day, Bangladesh, where they do not exactly get their hero’s welcome. We see a nation that is deeply hurt by the past, and one where Pakistani’s are rather unwelcome. However, there does seem to be some warming up, as the film explores regional politics through the representation of countries through teams from India and Bangladesh. Here, we see a lot of patriotic, borderline jingoist writing coming into play, as all sides strive to show their country is best.

Things go on chauvinistically for the rest of the film, which also veers into another narrative of Zara, trying to locate her long-lost grandfather (Manzar Sehbai), who is an unbeknownst victim of a war surrounding him. Culminating into Zara finding her grandpa, and the host country questioning Pakistan’s involvement into the competition, things come to a climax with the khel or performance finally being done on the proscenium arch.

Questioning the involvement of many obscure elements of the region, and the blatant Indian covert operations into breaking Pakistan into two, the theatre performance through its goosebump inducing moments talks about how a country and its citizens turned from loving each other into being sworn enemies. The play, ends with auditorium roaring with applause – mimicking also how possibly every Pakistan would also feel at the end of it as well.

The film, through all of these elements and plot structures, does one thing and one thing alone – it brings forward the belief that we as Pakistanis, are also allowed to put our point of view across about what the actual history looked like. Nabeel, does a brilliant job here by portraying Pakistan’s perspective on the war. There needs to be such a story told because it is also a right for every citizen to understand that many actions were taken by global players in the loss of East Pakistan.

The film however, has things going wrong for it as well. While one can applaud it for great acting and a story that has been done tastefully, there are elements which are far from great. The editing or rather the pace of the film is inherently flawed. Things jump from one scene to another without any care about what was previously happening. Arcs, too, are weak and most characters only have one shade in them, which is either black or white. The ensemble cast too, has been wasted. None of the talented debuting or one-film-old actors are used properly. They are placeholders and one trick ponies who honestly, could have been given better roles. Nabeel really does need to realise the ensemble can also be as important as the main leads.

If that’s not enough, there’s unnecessary addition of tons of jingoism which has been used a ploy to make people laugh or feel patriotic about their nation. This could really have been done without doing so.

It is a film with its heart in the right place, but with an execution that really needed to be polished before being released. An intellectual film with a dash of masala elements can still look much better than what Khel Khel Mein eventually turns out to be.

All in all, watch it for the fact that it raises a question that for half a century was hidden under wraps, and perhaps, learn to love the flaws this Nabeel Qureshi film makes without him realizing them.

Parde Mai Rehnay Do is brought to you by the makers of Karachi se Lahore, Lahore se Agey and is directed by Wajahat Rauf who has successfully directed various blockbusters in the past. The film is produced by Wajahat Rauf, Shazia Wajahat and Wajahat Abbasi while the the script is the brain-child of writer, Mohsin Ali of super-hit drama ‘Ishqiya’ and Dunk fame. The film’s release date has not yet been announced but we’re looking forward to what this promising team is bringing forward to the audiences this time around.

The teaser opens up with a ‘baraat’ scene with a loud band playing, people dancing and a lot of ‘hulla-gullah’ going on, they’re interrupted by Javed Sheikh’s hilarious one-liner and we’re then introduced to the drop-dead gorgeous heroine of the film, Hania Aamir, and her better half in the movie, the dapper Ali Rehman Khan. The couple is shown having a good time in some candid shots where they seem totally in love and are also seen celebrating their wedding anniversary. A peppy dance number takes over where Hania Aamir and Ali Rehman Khan are setting the screen on fire with some epic moves, and are dressed to kill, Hania looking to paint the town red in that dazzling ‘saari’ while Khan complements her in a yellow sherwani. We’re absolutely loving the on-screen chemistry of the two on-screen.

What raises our curiosity is the next part of the one-minute teaser, the happy couple is now distraught and we see Hania leaving her beau, crying her heart out and Ali Rehman Khan walking away from a marriage hall. There definitely seems to be something happening and we’re anxious to see the complete trailer to have some insight as to what’s causing havoc in their lives all of a sudden.

Some may argue that the Pakistani audiences have matured and are looking to watch intellectual movies but we do believe that some feel-good, all out ‘masala’ movies are definitely needed to have some fun on a night out! Time will tell how the movie fares at the cinemas, but we’re certainly going to be adding ‘Parde Mai Rehnay’ Do to our must-watch list!

The film will trace the story of the man who sexually abused and killed more than 100 children in Lahore, Pakistan between 1998 and 1999. The case was a particularly macabre one as the killer not only tortured and murdered the children, but he also butchered and dissolved their bodies in acid to get rid of the evidence. He was sentenced to death in the same way. The role of Javed Iqbal will be played by actor Yasir Hussain.

The film will feature Ayesha Omar as the lead character, an intrepid and determined police officer running the investigation on the serial killer and tracking down his accomplices.
Ayesha Omar, who is known for playing a diverse range of roles through her career, commented that this was bound to be a challenge but one that she’s certainly looking forward to.
