Artfully selecting her projects, Khan has recently signed a potential television hit 'Baddua' across her Choti Choti Batain co-star, Muneeb Butt. A project of Abdullah Seja, the drama is a story by Samina Ejaz of Phaans fame and is being directed by Ramish Rizvi of Jhooti fame.

The drama's title itself gives dark and depressing vibes, making us wonder if it will be yet another melancholic story. However, Amar Khan had earlier taken to Facebook and made it clear that this will be one drama that will, fortunately, will not have the heroine portrayed as the physically abused, damsel in distress.

Hip in Pakistan caught up with Amar to quiz her about the drama. Here’s what she revealed:

Tell us about Baddua. Will it be a dark drama like its name suggests?

Amar: It’s anything but a dark drama. It’s quite the opposite. Baddua will be an instant hook for the viewers and will be very entertaining with all the right spices, twists, and turns. Certain dramas are so fast-paced that their narrative immediately becomes a must-watch. Baddua is going to be one such story. I can’t reveal what this ‘Baddua’ will be about but it has an intriguing factor that gives the message that we should always watch out for someone’s curse or ill-wish.

Describe your character in the drama

Amar: What I love about my character is that she is vivacious. She is a blazing go-getter and has interesting dynamics to her personality along with unpredictable mood swings.

What about Muneeb’s character in the story?

Amar: I have not worked with Muneeb in a full-fledged capacity, but only partly in Hum TV’s teleplay. In Baddua you will see us in a unique fashion as we flaunt a new equation on-screen. They are quite a lot of quirks and shockers in his character as he an all-out lover boy in the tale, something different from what he has done before

The drama will air in a couple of months. The hype and expectations are high from the project. Fingers crossed for what it has in store for us!

The show tells the stories of a cross section of plus sized Pakistani women. It deals with the trials and tribulations of being 'motti' but also the eventual triumph of these women over archaic social norms. While the show has created some ripples on social media, we are yet to talk about it's soundtrack.

Sung by Farah Essa, the song is structured like a ballad. Although the song sounds a bit 'sad', the lyrics are empowering. Farah's brings her signature soulful style to the song. It is a moving number that is bound to make you have a second listen.

Farah Essa, herself a vocal advocate of body positivity is the perfect choice of singer for this number. Speaking to Team HIP, she asserted the fact that 'a woman should not be known for her shape or size but the strength of character she holds in life.' Farah's own belief in body positivity is what brings a kind of honesty to the number.

We are personally thrilled by all that Farah Essa and the show Oye Motti represent - a concerted effort towards body positivity in mainstream media.

The Plot

Azaan Sami Khan plays a drifter who fails to gain entry into a closed restaurant, breaks into a song and sort of coerces the owner of the restaurant into letting him in and serving him food. The two poles apart people then end up having dinner together, and the song serves as a bond that gains strength from the beginning till the end. From being on the outside to the inside, Azaan Sami Khan tries all the tricks in the book – from using a pay phone, to pleading for food without saying much – but it was the song that did the trick.

The Good – The youngster doesn’t follow his dad but himself!

First of all, appearing in a music video did wonders for the youngster; in an era when music is either being done on stage or in OSTs, Azaan Sami Khan’s bold move to release an album (digital, hopefully!) and music videos might give hope to all those music enthusiasts who aren’t producing songs anymore. Secondly, the best thing is that Azaan Sami Khan doesn’t go the RD Burman way like his father did and came up with his own style that might remind the listeners of his talented father but not RD Burman.

Produced by Meghdeep Bose, the compositions look straight from the 1990s when romantic songs were the ‘in’ thing but hey, we do need a little love in our life so that we can break away from the hatred that consumes us. Azaan Sami Khan does a fantastic job as a vocalist, and makes one wonders why he didn’t sing any song in his films; maybe he wanted to surprise the listeners by coming up with something that suits his style, and if that was the idea, he has succeeded in raising a few eyebrows. Not many music composers would go for an orchestra these days and prefer minimum instruments but that’s not how Azaan Sami Khan works. Like his father, he uses proper orchestra and the best musicians in the business to come up with a debut song that will stay for the listeners for a long time.

Also, Mohammed Ehteshamuddin’s direction is first-rate and proves that an accomplished director can do anything from films, TV to a music video. He keeps his team together (DOP Suleman Razzaq) and delivers a music video that might go onto serve as a benchmark for youngsters out there. And yes, it is his voice on the radio at the start and end of the music video where he announces Main Tera and teases the other song in pure ‘Amin Sayani’ style that was again part of the lives of those who grew up in the latter half of the last century.

The Bad – The lyrics could have been a little better

The loss of his frequent collaborator Shakeel Sohail must have hurt Azaan Sami Khan, for the late lyricist wrote some wonderful songs while working with the composer. Be it Parwaaz Hai Junoon, Parey Hut Love or Superstar, Shakeel Sohail did the bulk of the songs and sadly passed away last year. Had he been around, Main Tera would have been written as a proper song instead of a song that targets teenagers and people in their 20s. That might be the same age group as the singer but a song with perfect lyrics caters to all, not just a few. Also, the sudden disappearance of the restaurant owner and the emergence of herself in another avatar will make you watch the music video again because it does look confusing at first.

The Verdict – Azaan Sami Khan makes his parents proud!

Azaan Sami Khan has been composing songs for a long time and those who have worked with him praise him for his professionalism. After all, his mother Zeba Bakhtiar was herself one of the most professional actors in the business, while his father Adnan Sami Khan still works hard to create songs that stay with his listeners forever. The youngster makes both his parents proud by coming up with Main Tera at a time when no one dares to compose music citing financial loss, unavailability of music channels and lack of sales for audio CDs. With his upcoming song releasing next month, one hopes that Azaan Sami Khan challenges himself and creates something different that will herald the return of popular music in Pakistan, and give hope to those who have the talent but not the means to make it to the top.

The All Girl Band have shot through popularity in Pakistan and people are loving the aesthetic they are bringing to Pakistan with their distinct style!

Before this song, romance wasn’t an integral part of films, and neither was the dashing dressing that made a hero look like one. Enters Waheed Murad and changes the game altogether, the way he addresses the leading lady Zeba and follows her is stuff ‘dreams are made of’. It would be hard to believe that it was for the same film as Ko Ko Ko Rina, for the same character who was dancing in a club, and from the same team but that’s what diversity is, isn’t it?

Waheed Murad returned only as an actor in this Pervez Malik – Sohail Rana production and kept the mojo alive in all songs, including this one. Here he is trying to grab the attention of the leading lady Shamim Ara and who wouldn’t be impressed with Ahmed Rushdi providing the vocals, Sohail Rana the composition, Masroor Anwar the lyrics and Pervez Malik the direction!

Haan Isi Mod Par (Doraha)

It seems that this song was conceived, composed, written, sung, and picturized in nostalgic mode as it makes you nostalgic when you watch it. Even fifty-three years haven’t made it sound old, and why would it? The team behind it was the same as in Armaan and knew the pulse of the audience. The picturesque location of Murree add beauty to a song that remains evergreen to this day!

Mujhe Tum Nazar Se (Doraha)

Mehdi Hassan made his entry into Waheed Murad’s career with this classic number that was filmed while the leading man was sitting behind a piano, yet the expressions he gave, the confidence with which he played the instrument, and the emotions in his eyes are priceless, after five decades.

Kuch Loag Rooth Kar Bhi (Andaleeb)

With the arrival of color in films, Waheed Murad became more charismatic as his dressing sense, his romanticism, and athleticism all became more colorful. Here he is wooing Shabnam in their first colored film together and set the screen on fire, thanks to Ahmed Rushdi’s vocals, Nisar Bazmi’s composition, and Fareed Ahmed’s direction.

Aye Abre Karam (Naseeb Apna Apna)

Even though others were making colored films when this song came out, the black and white effect adds suspense to this track. Composed by Lal Mohammad – Iqbal and featuring Waheed Murad and Shabnam in the lead, this song earned Ahmed Rushdi his fourth and final Nigar Award for Best Singer and why wouldn’t it? It was a near-perfect track that make listeners fall in love again and again!

Pyar Karenge (Jeo Aur Jeenay Do)

Usually music directors went to Ahmed Rushdi when they wanted someone to sing a romantic number for Waheed Murad, and Mehdi Hassan for sad songs. However, music director Robin Ghosh opted for Mehdi Hassan in this number and the rest is history. Mehdi Hassan achieved the baritone voice required for this composition and made it eternal; Kavita’s beauty was the other factor!

Ik Baat Kahoon Dildara (Khuda Aur Mohabbat)

A Nayyar sang the most number of songs during the last ten years of Waheed Murad’s career, in fact, the last song to be filmed on him was also by A Nayyar, in Zalzala. The ace singer went on to compliment the band, Adnan Bhool and Rabi Ahmed, as well as Hadia Hashmi's strong vocal prowess, which Nigam commended, “I never thought it would be possible anymore but it has happened. God bless little Hadia, God bless Soch the band.” Sonu's emotional response warmed the hearts of Pakistani artists and singers alike, with the song bringing tears to his eyes, a huge compliment for the band and production!

Nescafe Basement producer, Xulfi, thanked Sonu Nigam in a video response to the legend. Showing appreciation, Xulfi said he had to make a video, this is a great thing for all Pakistani artists as well. Soch, the band, also shared their gratitude for Sonu's soulful response to the composition,

Fans speculated after seeing the teaser for the song releasing on 11th August, that it was shot at the historical Wazir Khan Mosque with playback music, this alleged news made rounds on social media before the Cheekh actor cleared it up.

Saba Qamar shared with fans that the stills shot at Wazir Khan Mosque had no playback music whatsoever, nor was it edited with or to any music, but a simple circular movement for the teaser, portraying a happy couple after their Nikkah was shot. She apologised if anyone had taken offence but strictly attested that it the teaser was a shot of stills without music, as there was no intent whatsoever to disrespect a historical place of grandiose and faith.

"The BTS video that's making rounds on social media was just a circular movement to click stills for the poster of ‘Qubool’ depicting a happily married couple right after their Nikah. Hurting or offending anyone or being disrespectful to a holy place is as unimaginable and unacceptable for me as for any decent human being."

The video for 'Qubool' will be released on the 11th of August as we await to see Saba Qamar's directorial debut with her latest project! Bilal Saeed has already shared some snippets from behind the scene, leaving us all the more eager to see the finished product!

The same feelings of love and trust, which one can compare to devotion of a 'Zahid' or 'Majzoob' who is divorced from the outside world while being immersed in an inner plane of sorts, like a whirling dervish who does not see anything else while compelled with passion.

The song discusses the painful ('gham') plight of a lover, 'ashiq' who is recalling how the same love that powered him through all his hardships has become his hardship, while he himself is losing all his senses after losing his love. The emotional lyrics cause an overwhelming sensation of a tidal wave of feelings which the whimsical Rahat Sahab is able to elicit from the audience. With true authentic poetry in the form of a velvety impassioned display of song creates another dimension for the listener to be submerged in entirely.

Not only do the lyrics entice you to the point of not being able to pull away from the riveting motions, the video itself is a work of magic in a superb cinematic art form. Grooving to the beat of Bilal Khan and Alycia Dias's synced symphonies, we enjoy the video even more with the singer's fun appearances. The little meet-cute going on between a lovelorn Azlan Shah who braves up to approach a glamorous Mariyam Nafees fits perfectly with the lyric and rhythm of the song. A contemporary pop genre, Alycia and Bilal have paired together to create modern music which we can enjoy especially in light of our the current predicament.

With the rapid transitioning of scenes from a lit party, to a fun masquerade to a concert, we experience a whole journey (which we wish we could be a part of) with the catchy vocals never far behind. Omran Shafique nails the audio beat with the talented duo of Bilal and Alycia hitting all the right cords and delivering the lighthearted end-of-summer mood we need.

The Video

The video is full of artsy decor where Azlan and Mariyam Nafees breeze through what seems like a Great Gatsby party with the lights, chandeliers, booths, graphics and best of all, the reference to Money Heist with the addition of orange jumpsuits. Zain Khan and Shaiz Raj created a visual fantasy world come true with all the escapist elements needed which we have missed in this lockdown. The song and video go hand in hand, with Bilal Khan and Alycia Dias enjoying the party and matchmaking as much as we are. With a kick-back and relax vibe, we can truly enjoy the song and take in all the ornaments and decor along with scene changes - albeit slightly confusing but it works.

After the rose doesn't work, the hopeless following and staring also comes to no fruition, the Cornetto saves the day! With a fun mix to the summer-crush angle, the world slows down when finally, something works! Take note, if the flowers do not work always try ice-cream! The slow motion effect brings together the momentum of the song, with Bilal and Alycia finally taking the stage.

Would we watch the video and hear the song again? Absolutely! The cute Gatsby-esque visuals along with the melodious music and fun foot-tapping beat creates a little world where people are quite frankly enjoying themselves and swaying to the rhythm. Mariyam Nafees and Azlan Shah do an adorable job of giving us some summer-moments on this fantastical adventure!

Fellow musician and friend, Babar Shaikh's thoughts were misconstrued and misinterpreted, according to Omran Shafique, who did not hold back when expressing his disappointment at the fact that the statement was printed 'without a single attempt to ask me my thoughts on the matter'.

"I never use words such as “dejected” or “hopeless” to describe my feelings on the Pakistani music scene. I am only humbled and grateful for having had the privilege of making music in Pakistan as a career for 15 years. I am not interested in pursuing a full time career in music anymore for myriad personal reasons but that is in not an indictment of said music scene."

Momo Shafique cleared the matter up aptly using his social media platform, where he clarified and rectified his feelings on the matter and why he planned to leave Pakistan, respectively. The decision is not a reflection on the music situation, which the artist has alluded to in his post. He has been involved in the Paksitani music scene for quite some time, making a name for himself. The talented musician has experienced being the 'Mauj' front-man, a house band guitarist for Coke Studio, seasons 1-11, playing live with Ali Azmat, Zeb & Haniya, Rushk, the 'Chand Tara Orchestra' etc.

"All those years and all those setbacks and still I consider myself lucky and fortunate to have had this music career in Pakistan. I am proud and grateful for being a part of the scene."

With appearances from other celebrities in the industry, including Hania Aamir and Areeka Haq, it seems like everybody's favourite thing about the video was Mr. Mooroo's (Taimoor Salahuddin) appearance.

Tilting a bit towards western 'rap' culture, the song received disappointed responses from fans who felt it was in bad taste, "glamourising haram culture" such as the scenes with intoxicants and presenting a "pretentious" culture where gold-digging, lusting after money and Scarface fashioned scenes are the norm.

Fans have also ruthlessly bashed the roles of Areeka Haq and Hania Aamir as "gold-diggers" making it seem normal or something "cool" and acceptable to objectify women, disappointing the public profusely with crude appearances and a misrepresentation of women. Some took to describing the visual portrayal as "disturbing" to see a popular actress in such a position, which undermines women and sexualises their nature, putting them into a category.

The memes and commentary on the video and song are relentless, with people not enjoying the collaboration or what it represents in entirety, searching the hashtag 'Tum Tum' on Twitter, reveals an array of reactions poking fun at the track and criticizing it's execution.

Despite negative reviews and critique, the video has managed to garner over 180,000 likes on YouTube currently, and popularity, whether people dislike it or not. With some praising the track altogether, one can make up their mind by listening to it themselves! What do you think?

Featuring Aima Baig as the female vocalist and also as the lady love in the music video, Te Quiero has been making rounds both at home and abroad. Composed by Shiraz Uppal and penned by his trusted lieutenant Shakeel Sohail, the music video has been choreographed by the one and only Nigah Hussain, who is usually behind well-produced music videos, film songs, and dance (or item) numbers.

Directed by Saad Hashmi and shot featuring both cuties Haadi and Aima, the song leaves you in a happy frame of mine and that’s what it was supposed to do. It not only brings back memories of the Golden Era of Pakistani Music but also heralds a new one, where youngsters will carry the torch forward. And boy, the future sure looks bright with them!

Haadi Ali Uppal not only sounds like his legendary father Shiraz Uppal but also considers him great influence. Don’t be impressed just by his majestic physique, he has transformed from a Wannabe Singer Son to Singer Who Makes Daddy Proud with his achievements in no time. Three years back he released his first song Deewangi which introduced him to the world as Shiraz Uppal’s successor … while his father was still reigning the field! The song was appreciated by all where a young Haadi displayed his command over vocal cords and understanding of music at such a young age.

Last year he also made his film debut as a playback singer with Chhalawa where his song Madhaniyan with Neha Chaudhry was appreciated along with other songs in the album. And don’t be surprised if you believed that Shiraz Uppal was lending his voice to the number; the music composer was directing his son from behind the mirror.

Talking exclusively to HIP, Haadi Ali Uppal disclosed that the song was visualized to break the monotony of quarantine and it wouldn’t have been possible without Aima Baig who encouraged him throughout this project.

‘Music seemed like my solace during quarantine as I felt that I needed to do something. The mood all over the country was pretty gloomy and dull so I then came up with Te Quiero. I worked on this project with my dad and asked him if we could create something that was mellow yet romantic to brighten up the mood a little. While we were working on it, Aima Baig was there to work on another project for a movie song and she then heard my vocals. She really encouraged me through this project and it would not have been the same without her. Creating something romantic with a bit of a western touch only had Aima’s calling, so we worked on it and shaped what you see today.’

And if you are over the handsome hunk’s dashing looks, think about the fact that music was never his first priority. Yes, Shiraz Uppal’s son would not have taken up music had it not been for the lack of Sports activities in the country. The youngster wanted to become a professional footballer (soccer) and since Sports especially any kind of Football doesn’t have an infrastructure in Pakistan, Haadi opted for the next best thing.

‘My interest in this field developed a while ago. I wanted to become a professional football player, as it has always been my passion. I would say either fortunately or unfortunately being in Pakistan, this was not necessarily possible. The resources for this particular sports field are very less. This got my mind ticking and working on finding out where my desire further resides.’

Thank God Pakistan doesn’t play Football, otherwise, music’s loss would have been Sport’s gain … and there wouldn’t have been Te Quiero. The hip romantic number appeals to both the young music lovers as well as those who grew up listening to Shiraz Uppal. There are a few words here and there in Spanish, the music video has been shot in new-age style whereas the composition seems like an amalgamation of both the new and old style of songs. While talking about the song, Haadi Ali Uppal said that they used the Spanish words in the lyrics because they fit perfectly in every way. And he also spoke about the sizzling hot chemistry between Aima Baig and himself.

‘We toiled with the chorus, and then Te Quiero which means I love you is what fit perfectly right in. It flowed so well and when my dad composed the melody along with it just felt seamless. The chemistry created with Aima was very natural and there is no one who could have done a better job.’

Haadi Ali Uppal also credits his father for being more of a friend than a parent, and why he likes working with him.

‘Working with my dad has been very interesting. Even though it was friendly and very cordial overall, there were instances where he would be very particular about things as he is a perfectionist. Unless and until I actually deserve it my dad would never praise. We worked on each and every element in great detail and this really has been a huge learning experience. I would say it has been a fun and memorable project for me.’

“Music has the power to inspire hope and spread positive energy around. The idea was to come together to give hope to people all over the world and show that humanity is alive and united in these turbulent times in the fight against the novel COVID-19 pandemic. We want to bring true optimism to people, not just one person, but the entire humanity. There is hope over despair, light over darkness, life over death, and this is what we want to remind the global population of at this time,”

“Maadar” is mother in Persian, after six long years the Parwaaz Hai Junoon actor found the courage -in his own words, to create this beautiful composition he has presented on Mother’s Day 2020. A tribute to his own mother, his eternal inspiration, as the moving lyrics and heartfelt visuals take us on a journey into his life and memory, leading us to reflect on our own experiences as well.

Alamdar Khan’s Persian symphony takes us away to another dimension with the start translating into a soulful,

“Maa where did you go? Remember me?”

Immediately tugging on our heartstrings as the video unfolds into the past and present atop an exquisite melody.

An emotional, deeply moving and wholesome creation, Maadar is truly a wonderful tribute to the singer’s mother along with his wish to mother’s all around the world; with a universal message, “Mother’s are forever.”

Facing issues such as anxiety and being restricted to his room, in solitude during this period of self-quarantine, the multi-talented artist took to his social media and asked his fans to help him write a song by simply humming a melody. He asked all his fans to participate by messaging him lyrics they wanted to hear and sending videos/artwork. One visual artist who worked with him on Udh Chaliye and Ankhiyaan to follow is Mariam Idris, “I was given the creative freedom to create it in my style, according to how Danyal wanted it,” who revealed her empathetic side helped her in trying to get the message to transcend into the animation, after collaborating and discussing it with Danyal himself. They brainstormed how to make the audience feel as if they were a part of the song itself, and the beautiful images and ideas which are a part of the song, together while creating a work of art.

“It’s kind of like a movement, not within just myself but with my fans.” Danyal Zafar conveyed while discussing the adrenaline pumping process of simply trusting his intuition and pure “gut feeling” into creating two hits! Udh Chaliye was written and composed within a day, this project was executed the very day Danny Zee hummed the serene melody for his fans and asked for their contribution. An influx of thousands of messages and hundreds of videos, artwork and ideas flew in, and with trust and a deep connection shared between the fans and Danny, he was able to compile it and release this fantastic new song being played by young fans and friends alike, not only making this something which has never been done before but a true bonding experience in this time of loneliness and isolation.

Akhiyaan is another recent release of the creative genius; Danny Zee reached out once again to his fans to send him their experiences with heartbreak, loss, hurt and to send him a few lines he could use to adapt into a beautiful soundtrack -which they gladly did. The passionate songwriter used his social media platform to let his fans know how he had to use equal ideas for equal gender representation and make an impactful product out of it, which he did, of course. Another sensational hit, Akhiyaan consists of hauntingly captivating lyrics in Urdu, Punjabi, English, with thought, idea and raw talent as this involvement with actual fans and interaction has led to a magical experience and delivery! Danyal has not only managed to conceive 2 songs within this quarantine but has created actual music which is streaming everywhere!

This course of action spun into existence when the multi-faceted artist turned to music in his time of isolation and let his extraordinary creative genius ensue which has been the foundation for relevant music which people actually want to hear as it’s coming from them. Danyal Zafar has against all odds done something with his fans which is applaudable, including their artwork, their input and taken into account what they want, delivering on par excellence and quite frankly, in-demand music. The esteemed poet and lyricist spoke on his YouTube live session after going on Facebook and Instagram respectively, about how this experience is important to bring people together and connect, making each other feel better and safe and assured as he offered to dedicate songs to people from the members, involving them and uplifting the isolated atmosphere. Taking us back on a trip down memory lane, the charismatic actor sang his famous song Channo as well as his first recorded song for the movie Shararat, Jugnuon Say Bher Le Anchal as well as reading out his moving poetry with the poem “Kuch Toh Ghalat Ho Raha Hai” sharing more of his life and his time with people, making it a wholesome and sincere experience.
