Humayun Saeed is back with a bang on TV in 'Dil Lagi'

First episode of 'Dil Lagi' is anything but run of the mill...none of the leading ladies cried!

So the much awaited Dil Lagi finally aired and it was actually pretty great. That none of the leads cried was enough to make me watch the entire episode; seriously it is actually a refreshing change!

Written by Faiza Iftekhar and directed by Nadeem Baig, Dil Lagi stars HUmayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat, Saba Hameed, Imran Ashraf, and Asma Abbas. It's the story of Anmol (Mehwish Hayat) who hails from a lower middle class household and lives with her mother and younger sister. She gets mugged while going to work with her sister and instead of doing the 'ab kya hoga, log kya kaheinge' crap, she runs after the criminal like a Bollywood action hero, catches him, and beats him up in public (this was really awesome actually). Why? Because there was 1340 rupees in her bag. Anmol isn't the type to cast herself as a victim (wait, what?) and doesn't tolerate injustice.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mehwish Hayat, but she wasn't bad as Anmol. Why they bronzed her face so much, I don't understand though. While all other productions are busy 'whitening' their female leads to the max, here they darkened her way too much.

Traffic is backed up and we meet Mohib (Humayun Saeed) and his some form of 'chota' (Imran Ashraf). Humayun Saeed seems to have found the fountain of youth because this guy refuses to age! He is back on screen after 4 years, yet easily gives his competition (young and old) a run for their money! They both see Anmol beating the guy up and Imran Ashraf makes a video. I enjoyed the "Kal tak yeh video zaroor youtube pe ayegi" line.

Mohib is a cultured ghunda and son of Saba Hameed who is a thukarein type. The less fortunate women come to her for advice and she doesn't mince her words at all. She thinks husbands are worthless, but as blunt as she is, her character is also very helpful. I don't think I need to tell anyone how well suited that role is for Saba Hameed.

out of no where two guys come into Anmol's house and tell her mother to pack up and leave as they are selling the house. Her father had given the house as collateral and even though he had paid the loan back, died a few days after so there is no proof (only in Pakistan). Lawyers aren't willing to take the case without proof of payment or legal documents, neither of which Anmol or her mother have.

Is sab pareshaani mein rishta bhi ana tha...because what is a Pakistani drama if there is no shadi? The guy's mum and sister go to see Anmol and the sister asks "ghar aapka apna hai?" Seriously, does this actually happen in Pakistan? Anmol's tells the truth about the house and of course her mum is livid because now they probably won't consider her. Good ridden then! If someone is going to say no to you because of the house you live in, you are the lucky one!

Mohib's workers are the ones who go to clear out Anmol's house because he has bought the house from Kifayat Ali. he doesn't think the women are living in the house alone and assumes the father is hiding inside. He has his men start throwing out the furniture, but does in struct them not to hurt the women.

When Mohib gets there he realizes this is the girl he saw beating up that criminal earlier. Of course he now is the hero as he tells his men to get lost and goes into the house to hear the mum's story. He tells them that no one will take this house away from them anymore and reveals who he is. Of course Anmol and her mother start scolding him and tell him to get lost. I didn't get why though since he told them the truth and said he'd make sure no one ever comes by again. You can trust the guy to come inside, have tea, and tell them your story, but can't trust him when he says he'll take care of it and reveals who he is?

Anyways, that is where the episode ends. This the third drama I watched of Faiza Iftekhar and love the fact that her leading ladies are strong and don't play the victim card. They are not sitting wallowing in their misery and crying ke ab kya hoga. This episode really was a departure from the other dramas on TV right now and I hope it stays that way. I hope the characters remain constant throughout.

Acting wise everyone was pretty great. Again, Humayun Saeed gives all the actors a run for their money. And seriously, how does he not age? He's like the male Mahnoor Baloch. Nadeem Baig's direction is spot on. He took the script and gave us a great visual of Faiza Iftekhar's writing. The one thing I will say is the lighting is too dark. I saw it on Youtube so maybe that is the issue though.

All in all, 5 stars!
