Urwa Hocane’s chartbusting serial, Udaari last year helped her convince the audience and critics alike with her performance. Proving her mettle on the small screen, Hocane is now all geared up to take the cinemas by storm. After making her debut with Na Maloom Afraad in 2014, the starlet is all set to return after a hiatus from the silver screen with not one, but four films!
“I want my work to consume me fully. It does get tiring sometimes but when you love your job, every new day brings with it a lot of excitement and hence, energy,” she told HIP in an earlier interview. “I have only ever done projects that I have firmly believed in. It's a coincidence and perhaps a blessing that four such brilliant scripts came to me around the same time and I am ecstatic that I got an opportunity to be associated with the best teams in the industry.”
Taking you through a journey of Urwa’s impressive forthcoming filmography, here’s why we think 2017 is undeniably Urwa’s year:
Punjab Nahi Jaungi
The trailer doesn’t say much about the film's plot, but we do know there’s a love-triangle brewing between her, the uptight Humayun Saeed and the oh-so-modern, Mehwish Hayat. Now there’re some serious stereotypes in the film, but all to be taken in good humor. Directed by Nadeem Baig of Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, the film truly promises an entertaining watch.
Speaking of Hocane’s character in particular, we love the shimmery, colorful wardrobe that’s been designed by Deepak Perwani. Her control over the Punjabi dialect, humorously that is this time around, is something we’re looking forward to.
Na Maloom Afraad 2

The sequel to Urwa’s debut film, Na Maloom Afraad sees her recur as Fahad Mustafa’s on-screen love interest (turned wife), and even though one does not see much of her in the film’s trailer, we see a different shade of the once-naïve Naina. As the film’s trio, Mustafa, Mohsin Abbas Haider and Javed Sheikh fly to Cape Town, so does Urwa and her transformation is evident as naturally, the character evolves.
The wardrobe is a lot more current and contemporary, while her hairstyle now has fringes. The madcap situational comedy by Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meera is all set to fight the box office battle with Punjab Nahi Jaungi on Eid-ul-Adha and with both the films being potential hits, HIP anticipates the release of both equally.
In contrast to Urwa’s commercially viable Eid releases, Rangreza is a departure from what we’ve seen of her on the silver screen. An orthodox love saga dealt musically, Urwa's character in the film comes from a musical background and falls for a rock-star, to be essayed by Bilal Ashraf. However, how Gohar Rasheed comes into play in the unspoken romance is something we’re intrigued to see.
Judging by the film’s teaser and first song, Pakistani cinema hasn’t witnessed a film like Rangreza and let’s just say, our expectations are sky high. Helmed by first-timer Aamir Mohiuddin, the film is all set to release this fall on the 21st of December.
Another romantic-comedy in her kitty, Jhol stars Ali Azmat, Saleem Miraj and Nausheen Shah alongside Hocane, Bilal Ashraf and Ayesha Omar will be seen in cameo appearances. Though the release date of the film hasn’t yet been confirmed, we cannot wait to find out more deets on this one!
On the top of her game, Urwa Hocane is all set to prove her versatility with her upcoming endeavors. Stay tuned to this space for more updates on all that Hocane is up to!
