Pakistani writer Sanam Maher’s first book based on the life story of controversial social media star Qandeel Baloch has been shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize 2018.
The author announced the fantastic news with us through her official Twitter account. “Some fantastic news to start the day off - The Sensational Life & Death of Qandeel Baloch is shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize this year,” she wrote expressing her excitement.
The book titled, The Sensational Life & Death of Qandeel Baloch, has been selected alongside five others books, all written by debutantes.
The winner will be announced in November and the recipient of the award, which was setup to appreciate writers from the subcontinent, will receive INR 200,000 alongside a trophy.
Released earlier this year, The Sensational Life & Death of Qandeel Baloch, revolves around the life of 26-year-old model, Fauzia Azeem aka Qandeel Baloch who was murdered in an honor killing case by her brother in 2016.
According to the Shakti Bhatt Foundation’s official social media account, the biography is “a testimony to the short, incandescent and courageous life of this Pakistani social media personality, murdered for the family’s honour by her brother. Through the story of Qandeel’s life and death, Maher shows us what it means to be a woman who defies convention in a patriarchal society.”
