"The appointment of Elgar as stand-in captain is part of our strategy to develop our pool of leaders," Cricket South Africa selection convener Linda Zondi said. "We have previously used Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock in this role in ODI matches and Dean has previously captained the Proteas at Test match level against England at Lord's in 2017."

Fellow Aiden Markram, is a doubt with a thigh injury and will undergo fitness test to ascertain his availability for the test. Uncapped Cape Cobras opening batsman Pieter Malan has been called as a backup. Malan is the in-form domestic batsman having scored 629 at 52.41.
