A major avenue in Brooklyn, previously named as Coney Island Avenue, got renamed after the name of the founder of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, indeed a very proud moment for Pakistanis.

The decision to rename the avenue was taken on 25th December 2018 – Jinnah’s Birthday, by the New York City Council in order to honor the founder of Pakistan. Convincing the Americans to rename the avenue wasn’t an easy task but Pakistan American Youth Organization (PAYO) made it possible. It was their long struggle which convinced the City Council to take this decision. Pakistani-American Youth Organization President Waqil Ahmad said, “It is a gift to the Pakistani-American community here as well as to the people of Pakistan.”

The avenue was renamed in an inauguration ceremony held on Friday. The road renamed as Muhammad Ali Jinnah road is a Muslim majority area hence the ceremony was attended by a large number of Pakistanis.

Naeem Iqbal Cheema, the Pakistani Consul-General in New York was the chief guest at the event. Addressing the ceremony Cheema said, “Today's ceremony reflected the close relations and friendship between the Pakistani community and the New York City Council. I pay tribute to the Pakistani community, specially PAYO, for their hard work and for raising Pakistan's prestige in the United States.”

Williams, the city council member, said, “It is an honor for me to serve the Pakistani community and to inaugurate the newly named avenue. I am well aware of the suffering, the Pakistani community had to endure following the 9/11 attacks, but through resilience, the Pakistani community has now reached a point that the New York City Council bestowed a special honor on the father of their nation.”
