The Meekal Zulfiqar and Armeena Rana Khan starrer Sherdil has created quite a buzz ever since its trailer was released on March 5th. The film will see a nationwide rollout over the Pakistan day weekend on March 22nd. And now it seems foreign audiences and overseas Pakistanis will not miss out on the action in this much awaited PAF drama.
It has now been reported that leading overseas distributor Tanweer Group has signed a deal with the film for distribution in the Turkish, Middle Eastern and South East Asian markets. The distribution company, which bills itself as “an international leader in the distribution of theatrical, television and digital content in the regions of Greece, Cyprus, India and the SAARC territories, Turkey, Middle East & North Africa (MENA), Malaysia and Brunei” has pinned on March 28 to release the film, which is a week following its Pakistani release.
In a large-scale rollout, the group will release the movie in Indonesia, Turkey, Malaysia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and UAE markets. Tanweer Group has decided to launch its marketing initiatives in these countries with a brand new trailer.
The minute and a half long sequence begins with a monologue on “Love, Honor and Duty of Country” being the three core values instilled in a PAF fighter pilot. It also features some never seen before scenes featuring the characters Flight Lt. Haris and his Indian counterpart Arun Veerani interacting in more pleasant conditions on ground. In one particular shot that particularly resonates following recent Indian hostilities, Haris extends a hand of friendship towards Arun in a well-enacted exchange that has subtexts of the underlying Indo-Pakistan friction.
Featuring Arabic and English subtitles, the trailer ends with the much publicized VFX-rich aerial dogfight sequence, which is going to be the USP of the film. A rousing monologue in the background echoes --“The one who is ready to embrace martyrdom can never be defeated”.
Sharply edited, with more dramatic tension and an emphasis on aerial combat sequences, the new trailer is sure to attract attention of foreign audiences. It can be viewed here:
The Middle East market over the years has turned out to be a lucrative one for the Pakistani film makers, with last year’s Eid-ul-Azha releases doing especially well, grossing about Rs 8 Crores from the UAE market alone.
The region has a large number of overseas Pakistanis as well as members of the South Asian community who are ardent viewers of Pakistani cinema. With proper marketing Sherdil, which centers on a scenario very reminiscent of current violations of LOC by India, has the potential to open strongly in the region given strong patriotic sentiments of overseas Pakistanis. The film will also be released in UK and North America, although the dates have not been finalized according to the makers.
Sherdil is directed by Azfar Jafri and produced and written by Nomaan Khan. The main cast includes Meekal Zulfiqar, Armeena Khan, Hassan Niazi and Sabeeka Imam. The film is to be distributed within pakistan by ARY Films.
