Sajal Aly and Adnan Siddique’s debut Bollywood flick Mom, released in China this weekend and has raked in almost $6 million business in its opening weekend. The crime thriller that also stars late Indian icon, Sridevi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, has left behind Indian films like Padman, Sultan and Thugs of Hindostan with its opening numbers.
The movie was released in 38,500 screens in China by Zee Studios International on May 10. Mom also scored a better opening than another Bollywood hit ‘AndhaDhun’ released last month in the country.
However, the film’s weekend numbers could not compete Pakistani star Saba Qamar’s Bollywood debut Hindi Medium which was released in China last year in April.
Produced by Boney Kapoor, Mom centres on the harrowing experiences of a girl, played by Sajal, who was brutally gang-raped by her spoilt schoolmates, and how her stepmother essayed by Sridevi, with whom she had a troubled relationship, sought justice for her. The film had an average run at its home market.
