In her debut web series Kaafir premiered on Saturday 15 June, Bollywood actress Dia Mirza plays a young Pakistani mother who comes to India under strange circumstances and is unable to go back home.

In a special screening of the show held on Friday which was attended by Dia and an array of stars, she opened up on why she chose to play a Pakistani character in the show and was not afraid of choosing this role.

“This show is trying to address the prejudices that we have in our society. When people ask me, ‘Weren’t you afraid of playing a Pakistani character in the show?’ I say that I feel that our show is trying to question that fear and we are trying to remove that fear from people’s mind,” the Sanju star said on her decision on to play a Pakistani role.

She expressed her happiness on being part of a show which talks about humanity and hopes that people will applaud the team’s efforts.

‘There is a problem all over the world that we see people from unfortunate lenses which include lenses of culture, country and caste and I feel these are very unfortunate ways to view humanity. We shouldn’t be prejudiced against people because of religion, caste or place that they belong to. That is precisely what Kaafir addresses and I hope after watching this show, people will get their answers,’’ Dia added who considers working on such shows a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’

Written by Bhavani Iyer, who has also scripted Dia’s upcoming second web series, Kaafir is a historical drama that revolves around the relationship between a woman, who is accused of militancy and a journalist-turned-lawyer who makes her justice his sole objective.
