TV anchor Mureed Abbas was shot dead on Tuesday night by a gunman. According to South SSP Shiraz Nazeer, Abbas and Khizer were in Bukhari Commercial and standing at a roadside when an unidentified gunman in a car opened fire at them. Mureed Abbas received bullet injuries on his chest and abdomen and they both died on the way to the hospital.
Police sources said the murder could be a result of personal enmity. However, an investigation would be done to ascertain the actual cause. Meanwhile, IG Sindh has taken notice of the firing incident and sought a detailed inquiry report from DIG South Karachi.
The officer said that a police party raided the residence of the suspected killer and caught him attempting suicide. "The suspect shot himself in the chest," he said, adding that the suspect was shifted to a local hospital in critical condition.
Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Executive Director Seemin Jamali confirmed that Abbas had been brought dead to the hospital. She said that the anchorperson sustained multiple bullet wounds on the chest and abdomen.
According to Sheeraz Nazeer, two first information reports (FIR) for murder and attempted suicide have been lodged by police. The suspect, who attempted suicide is recovering, he added. Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, who was on a visit to Iran, also took notice of the incident and discussed the matter with the chief secretary over the telephone. He issued directions to maintain law and order in the city.
