Sharmeen Chinoy Opens Up About How Films Change Your Lives!
Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a Pakistani Journalist, Documentarian, Activist and Filmmaker. She is known for her work in films that highlight the inequality with women. Chinoy talks about how movies can make an impact on our lives, she talks about how films can make us change the way we think, our thoughts and values, more so, Our culture. Two times Oscar winner was one of the speakers of the TED 2019 conference held in April In Vancouver, Canada.
The filmmaker took the stage to discuss the films and their impact, she started off with saying "I am a storyteller but I am also a trouble maker. I have a habit of asking difficult questions.”
She spoke about how she felt that something visual would be more effective. “At the age of 21, I became a documentary filmmaker, turning my camera onto marginalised communities on the front lines in war zones, eventually returning home to Pakistan, where I wanted to document violence against women.”
Sharmeen went on to say that they were surprised that they were welcomed in so many places that they went to. “We are documenting what we are doing. We talk to people. We adapt. We change the line-up of films.”
On a parting note she said that a group has contacted them and wants to take the mobile cinema to Bangladesh and Syria. “In small towns and villages across Pakistan, men are changing the way they interact with women, children are changing the way they see the world, one village at a time, through cinema.”
