IMGC Entertainment and YNH Productions’ joint presentation Wrong No. 2 was released last month over the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday period. It has now emerged the leading box office grosser of the year, beating Wajahat Rauf’s Chhalawa which released alongside at the same time.

Prior to its Eid rollout, Wrong No. 2 had seen some relatively low-key promotions, with director Yasir Nawaz confident about the comedic content of the film as well as the brand value associated with the Wrong No. tag. The movie also featured no big names, and its male lead Sami Khan’s last outing Gumm had not fared well at the box office, too. Therefore it came as a pleasant surprise when Wrong No. 2 opened to big numbers, and then was able to sustain the momentum it had picked over the festive Eid period to emerge a box office winner.

Speaking exclusively to HIP, the film’s director Yasir Nawaz said “As of now, the film has crossed the 20 crore mark at the box office, and continues to attract sizable audiences all over the country. It is a sure shot blockbuster.”

We couldn’t help but ask Yasir about the main factor behind the film’s roaring success. “The main reason we received this level of response at the box office is that the film is comedy, the type of comedy that resonates with the audience. It is completely original, and no one can say we have lifted portions of a certain film or sought inspiration from somewhere else. The movie is complete entertainment for the two and a half hour duration the audience spends in the theater,” he responded, adding “I have been to several shows of the film myself, and the members of the audience came up and told me that they thoroughly enjoyed the movie. We have been successful at putting a smile on people’s faces, which gives me great happiness.”

Yasir also emphasized that the audience responded to the type of comedy in the film that has a completely Pakistani flavor. “Our audience is not an easy one to please when it comes to comedy. They have witnessed greats such as Munawwar Zareef, Moin Akhtar, Omar Sharif and Lehri sahib. The key reason why Wrong No. 2’s comedy has clicked is because it has a uniquely Pakistani flavor and does not have any crassness.”

When queried if there were any plans to launch the third installment in the series, Yasir replied that for now a couple of ideas were under discussion but nothing had been finalized.

Made at a budget of about 5.5 crores, Wrong No. 2 had already recovered a substantial amount of its budget courtesy digital, satellite and music rights. Its solid theatrical run will prove to be an encouraging sign for medium budget projects, and will also be a shot in the arm for the careers of its star studded cast. We wish Yasir Nawaz the best for his future productions and cannot wait to see what he has to offer next!
