With two emotionally stirring episodes so far, Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay continues to grow strong!

After all, a script by Umera Ahmed is bound to impress us all. Every story by the writer is a masterpiece with deep dialogues and a storyline with messages engraved in it.

Starring an ensemble cast of Mahira Khan, Kubra Khan, Usman Mukhtar, and Haroon Shahid, the drama is directed by Farooq Rind of Pyar Ke Sadqay fame. The veteran cast is equally powerful featuring Shameem Halali, Ali Tahir, Huma Nawab, and Laila Wasti.

There is so much we are liking about the drama, even though it yet again revolves around a love triangle between cousins. Let’s do a quick review of what went down in Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay last night and what are we expecting more from the drama.

A case of cousin rivalry

We saw in the last episode how Mehreen’s (Mahira Khan) life went into turmoil after the death of her father, impacted by drug addiction.

A never-ending cycle of abhorrence began for the poor child. Her maternal grandmother (Shamim Halali) despised her. Her cousin Mashal (Kubra Khan) teased her for having a wicked father. And her own mother (Laila Wasti) later left her to marry again. But Mehreen is surely not the damsel-in-distress like we see in most Pakistani dramas. Even though she has very low support from the members of the household, she is one strong woman completing her M.Phil. Mashal has it all which Mehreen doesn’t. She is stunning, wears the best clothes, drives the most luxurious car, and has the love of all those around her.

Mehreen might not have the ease in life her cousin has. But she braced herself to fight it all to achieve her dreams. We see that she comes home late when her mother visits the home with her other daughters from the second marriage.

We also witness the bitter exchange of words between the mother and her daughter. Mehreen remains as stiff as a board around her mother, not warming up to her tears, or her gifts, or her monetary help. It’s clear she won’t forgive her mom for leaving her as a child in a world where everybody treated her as a stranger.

The episode also introduces us to Safi (Haroon Shahid) who is the handsome cousin of Mehreen’s best friend, Sheeba. He is head over heels in love with our heroine and wants to marry her. But Mehreen is making him wait. For whom? Of course, the reason is her dashing cousin in America, Aswad (Usman Mukhtar).

Little does she know, that Mashal has severely brainwashed Aswad against Mehreen. She has fed him lies, maligned her cousin’s character in front of him, portraying her as a spoiled brat who is a burden on the whole family.

Apparently, she wants to ensure that it’s her name on the wedding card next to Aswad. Her parents (Zainab Qayoom and Ali Tahir) too are leaving no stone unturned to assure that their daughter is betrothed to Aswad.

The promo of the next episode shows how Mehreen opens up about her childhood being a nightmare and how she has survived in the tormented household after her father’s death.

Not your average damsel in distress story

What we love the most about Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay is that Mahira Khan’s character is shown to be strong, rebellious, blunt, and not like the meek Cinderella avatars portrayed in most dramas.

Mehreen is headstrong, uses her art of painting to earn money, and is pursuing higher studies to ensure a successful future. Mahira also looks adorable in the nerdy avatar and has pulled off those geeky glasses with aplomb. She owns every frame and portrays all the moods of Mehreen so seamlessly.

Meanwhile, Kubra Khan is killing it as the vain Mashal. She is acing those jaunty expressions, her vampy look, and that evil smile. Her character too has been shown as pursuing higher education akin to that of Mehreen. But she isn’t as talented as her rival, but surely is more alluring.

We see little of Usman Mukhtar. His scenes as Aswad are so far limited. He has those same sober and decent look that reminds us of his Aana days. He has a pensive style, hardly laughs or smiles, often appearing to be lost in deep thought. We would love to see Usman open up a bit more in his avatar as Aswad. Hopefully, as the story paces, we shall see a more aggressive side as the promo hints.

With impeccable direction by Farooq Rind and a stellar script, Hum Kahan Kay Sachay Thay will surely be reaping views and ratings. A love triangle amidst cousins surely isn’t keeping fans away. What is next to come? We are assuming Mashal will not be succeeding in her efforts and it will be a win for Mehreen. But at a cost of what? Let’s wait and watch.
